Family of Deaf Father Killed by Police Speak Out

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Family members of Deaf father killed by North Carolina trooper speak out to the media in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- WCCB: Donors raised more than $2,600 for the family of the hearing impaired man killed when a state trooper shot him Thursday. Daniel Harris’ family says they will use the money to pay for his cremation.

Troopers say Harris was speeding and failed to pull over on I-485 Thursday night. When he did stop on Seven Oaks Dr., Trooper Jermaine Saunders says Harris advanced. That’s when he says he shot.

His immediate family members are also hearing impaired. His brother, Jay Harris, spoke to WCCB Charlotte through a sign language interpreter. “He was unarmed,” said Jay Harris. “And he is a Deaf individual, and I think that he was just afraid.”

Jay Harris thinks his brother was unaware Trooper Saunders was trying to pull him over for speeding. Trooper Saunders says he shot Harris because he was advancing and not following commands.

“He could not hear their warnings. He could not hear their commands to stop or to stay away from them,” said Jay Harris.

Harris was a father of a four-year-old little boy. Family says his mother is in the hospital with a heart issue since the shooting.

“He was shot, and now we’re left with nothing,” said Jay Harris.

They want the state to document in the DMV system when a driver is Deaf to alert officers when they pull over someone who is hearing impaired.

“What is wrong with us, and what is wrong with a system that allows this to continue to happen? It needs to stop,” said Jay Harris. “Daniel’s death represents that he is a hero in our Deaf community. He will raise awareness on this issue so that we can prevent this from happening to other Deaf people in our community.”

Ed Bosson & Sabrina Blount Fundraising Controversy

VIDEO: Signed - Exclusive: This article is about the stark comparison between Sabrina Blount's fundraising and Ed & Lisa Bosson's fundraising on the social media in the Deaf community.

Sabrina Blount is a Deaf African-American woman and a single mother who was kidnapped, abused, raped, robbed and left for dead in North Carolina. She needs 20,000 to take care of Sabrina's health as she had to be rehabbed & recover from the severe injuries.

On other hand, Ed & Lisa Bosson are Deaf white couple from Texas who lived in a well-to-do neighborhoods in Wimberley about 20-25 miles southwest of Austin. They lived in a house which has the Blanco River right behind their backyard. And they got flooded - only downstairs were destroyed. Ed & Lisa made lots of good salaries when they worked at Texas School for the Deaf, University of Texas, Texas Public Utility Commission and CEO of Convo Relay. They asked for 30,000 dollars to replace what they lost in their home.

Sabrina Blount raised $5,165 in 25 days http://www.gofundme.com/tg85nsks.

The Bossons raised $16,790 in 24 hours http://www.gofundme.com/bosson.

What is wrong with this picture? Please watch this vlog in ASL.

There are many unfortunate Deaf people that needs this funding. The Bossons are not poor. They are well-to-do couple. Their home costs over 500,000 dollars. Their home is pretty huge 2,197 sq foot with 2.6 acres.

Ed used to work for Texas PUC as Administrator - earned over $100,000. I'm sure they have money hidden away, they did not want to touch that, they only wanted to use people's funds to replace what they lost.

Right now, Austin Lawn Service owned by Paul Rutowski is volunteering to clean Ed's property for free which is very nice of him and his company to do. But there are many Deaf people who are going through the same thing, will Paul do the same for others? I think not. So it appears to me that they are practicing elitism at its worst. -Ridor9th

Please donate to help Sabrina Blount to cover the medical costs, http://www.gofundme.com/tg85nsks. Why donate to the rich bastard, Ed and Lisa Bossons instead Sabrina Blount, who is a poor and victim of crime? Yep, there is something wrong with this picture. This is shameful thing to see that some Deaf people still are racists out there.

Friends, colleagues and future unknown donnors, could you imagine being a Deaf person in living in refugee or displaced camps or striving through natural disasters or war zone in developing countries? Well, I have lived half my life through and I know first-hand how hard it can be. During my Graduate studies at the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, I was given the provileges to explore the current situation faced by other millions of Deaf men, women and children in developing countries.

There are unnacounted millions of Deaf refugees all over the world and currently, the United Nations High Commissariat on Refugees (UNHCR) and almost all international humanitarian organizations do not possess any system or procedures to properly identify refugees who are Deaf and provide them with proper humanitarian services or protections...
