Deaf News: Gary Neville donated $32,000 (£20,000) to Great Britain's Deaf Football team to send the squad to the Deaflympics.
LONDON, UK -- Daily Mail: Gary Neville has paid £20,000 out of his own pocket to book Great Britain's Deaf Football squads their places at the Deaflympics.
GB Deaf Football do not receive public funding and made an appeal for financial assistance last month as they tried to put together enough money for the deposit which would guarantee their spot at next year's event in Samsun, Turkey.
The organisation needed to raise £17,750 before December 1 but what appeared to be a tough task melted away when Manchester United legend Neville stumped up the whole lot, with interest, after being alerted to the cause on Twitter.
And he has followed through on his promise, with GB Deaf Football posting a screenshot of their justgiving website on Wednesday which showed the Sky Sports pundit's donation had landed in their account.
They wrote: 'It's official. Thank you @GNev2 for donating £20,000 to send us to the Deaflympics 2017.'
GB Deaf Football need to lay on training sessions and warm-up matches in their preparations for the Deaflympics, as well as finding funds for flights, hotels and physiotherapy.
While Neville has paid for the deposit, the group still need to secure a further £105,000 to ensure both men's and women's squads can take part next summer.
Neville is the second leading football personality to make an important pledge to British Deaf Football in the space of 12 months.
In 2015, Jack Butland made a £5,000 donation to help send the women's team to this year's World Cup.
At the time, Butland said: 'I've learnt a lot from major tournaments, experiences I'll never forget, I'd love for you to experience the same.'

Eddie Redmond, the society’s chief executive, said: “The Deaf community face huge barriers in accessing services due to the lack of services available through Irish Sign Language.
“Services such as social workers, home help, the HSE etc need to be more aware of the needs of Deaf people and the importance of communication and provision of information through ISL.”
Originally from Kerry, the brothers, in their 70s, were Deaf with limited verbal communication, and lived together in a terraced home at the Millrose Estate in Bluebell, Dublin for many years.
Daniel is understood to have run the household and became carer for William in recent years. It is believed that he passed away several weeks ago and William was unable - or felt unable - to seek help.
Their remains were found by gardaí after a neighbour noticed Daniel’s car had not moved for some time and there had been no sign of either brother outside the house. Their deaths are expected to be referred to the coroner’s court for an inquest but foul play has been ruled out.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) declined to say if the brothers were in contact with any of its services in recent times or if it was reviewing any interactions they may have had.
A statement said: “The HSE cannot comment on individual cases but would like to offer sincere sympathy to the McCarthy family at this time.”
Groups working with older people urged people with concerns for their own well-being, or that of a neighbour, not to be afraid to knock on a door.
Alone said older people should be encouraged to approach their neighbours for help, while Age Action asked younger people not to worry about appearing nosy if they enquired after an older person in their community... Read More at Irish News.

WFD HELSINKI -- International Week of the Deaf (IWD) is celebrated annually by Deaf people worldwide during the last full week of September. World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)’s 133 national associations of the Deaf organise this year's theme is "With Sign Language, I am Equal" events, marches, debates, campaigns and meetings to highlight specific human rights topics that merit attention by local and national governmental authorities, including decision makers, members of the general public and media.
International Week of the Deaf is about gathering together, becoming united, and showing that unity to the rest of the world. This celebration also increases solidarity among Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people and their allies, and is used as a way to stimulate greater efforts to promote the rights of Deaf and HoH people.
International Week of the Deaf activities also welcome the involvement of parents and families of Deaf people, interpreters, professionals who work with Deaf people and government officials - SignTv Deaf News.

METRAC has for years provided sign language services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing women through direct translation, but feedback from the Deaf community showed it “wasn’t very helpful,” said METRAC’s legal director Tamar Witelson.
“This is about increasing access to justice. There’s a lot of concerns when women are separating from their partners, and it’s even harder for Deaf women,” she said, noting that having a multimedia element in the resources will go a long way.
The challenges facing Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing women during family separation battles can stretch beyond just access to justice. If a family is breaking up due to intimate abuse in relationships, for example, the woman is less likely to even seek legal help because of stigma around such cases, Witelson said.
“We still have many women in this situation who don’t even understand what their legal rights are,” she said. “Many even end up going in court without a lawyer to represent them.”
According to Canadian Hearing Society, there are over 530,000 people in Ontario who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. That’s almost 5 per cent of the population.
VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Reasons why Deaf people support Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton for the United States Presidential Election 2016.
WASHINGTON -- Why would Deaf people vote for someone like Donald Trump instead of Hillary Clinton, besides the fact that on list “Vote for a Democrat” ranks right there below “catch cold” it’s actually less about how good Trump is he’s not "he’s terrible" than about how bad Hillary is super terrible, as in “Destroy America” terrible. So it's easy to look at Hillary's history and her belief in the American leadership as a presidential campaign lying in the United States history.
Therefore, the reason why Deaf people for Hillary supporters want to vote for a Democratic nominee for US president 2016. Watch the 77 faces of Deaf Hillary supporters aren’t just voting for her, because she’s a woman, nor don't care.
Let this be clear. This isn’t a pro-Trump blog. Not voting for Trump. But after watching hours of footage of both Trump and Hillary, Have seen an incredible pattern that Trump would be president. Even though not voting for him.
Not because They want Trump to, but because he is head and shoulder above Hillary when it comes to campaigning and you may not have realized why it’s working so well. Here's the video with closed captions and will be voting for Trump.

So let’s rewind one year to see how Trump got to where he is and how that can show us where he’s going. Because as soon as Trump announced, a lot of people thought it was a joke.
First he was seen as a joke... Then he started making outlandish statements, dominating the news cycle... Then he took down his republican rivals one by one, naming them Weak Jeb, Little Marco, and Lyin' Ted... And now he has set his sights on Hillary Clinton.
Hillary, in the meantime, has demonstrated an ineffective strategy. Her slogan, "Love trumps hate," has Trump's name in it. Her talking points typically come back to the fact that she is a woman, which Trump has labeled "playing the woman card."
It has caused her to slip to the point where she and Trump are at a dead heat in the polls. Some even have him up. Source.

"Newly released State Department records, including previously unreleased emails fromHuma Abedin, appear to show Clinton Foundation donors calling in favors from then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The new documents released on Tuesday were obtained by the legal watchdog group Judicial Watch as part of their Freedom of Information Act lawsuit that seeks information about Abedin’s unique employment arrangement with the State Department. Judicial Watch claims some the documents paint a troubling portrait of then-Secretary of State Clinton possibly giving preferential treatment to top campaign bundlers and Clinton Foundation donors.
For example, an April 2009 email exchange with the subject line “[a] favor…” appears to showlongtime Clinton associate Doug Band reaching out to Abedin and Cheryl Mills, writing, “Important to take care of [name redacted].”... Read More.

VIDEO: Deaf News - Students outraged after Australian university made six kittens Deaf for a year before killing them for cochlear implant research.
VICTORIA, AU -- Daily Mail: Australian universities are under fire for using cruel animal testing practices as part of various medical and scientific studies.
But one Deakin University student is calling on the prestigious institutions to end their cruel practices.
Alexandra Sedgwick, 24, has kickstarted a campaign against her own university after she suspected Deakin to be using fetal pigs cut from the bodies of pregnant mothers in scientific studies.
Ms Sedgwick organised a meeting on Friday morning with the Dean of the faculty of science, engineering and built environment, to put her case against the university's current animal testing policy.
But the vegan activist said her message was difficult to get across as she was refused any support in the meeting.
'It was an intense experience. I had requested to bring in people as support which the Dean didn't allow,' Ms Sedgwick told Daily Mail Australia.
Ms Sedgwick said the university branded her view as 'unique' and unsupported as she was not allowed to bring in her support team.
Other Australian universities also use cruel animal testing practices for scientific and educational purposes.
The University of Melbourne made six kittens Deaf before killing them as part of a medical study with the Bionics Institute while Monash University made eight healthy baby monkeys brain dead as part of a brain injury study, Fairfax Media reported.
Despite Ms Sedgwick's efforts, the Dean stood by his position that animal tissue was more effective in scientific studies than non-animal alternatives, and insisted they had already adopted a cruelty-free stance.
'If they were a cruelty-free university, why wouldn't they agree to stop using animals? It doesn't make sense to say we have all these animals but then say we're not going agreeing to stop,' Ms Sedgwick said.
'For me this was never about Deakin, it was about Victorian universities and institutions and I had hoped Deakin would be the first to change,' she said.
She acknowledged the difficulty of being up against a big organisation with extensive resources but hopes to further expose animal cruelty in science through her social media accounts and by connecting with like-minded people.
'I've had hundreds of people contact me and hopefully they will be willing to tell their stories.
'I hope to connect with Victorians, students, researchers and interns who are brave enough to tell the truth about this, as universities are all quite secretive especially in the research department,' she said.
Over 900,000 animals are killed for scientific purposes in Victoria alone, which has been increasing every year for the past 10 years according to the most recent data from 2014.
Ms Sedgwick said this does not include animal organs purchased from slaughterhouses.
While she described the mood as 'devastating', Ms Sedgwick said she will not stop pursuing the issue and urges all students not to participate in dissection.
Trevor Day, Deakin's executive dean of the faculty of science, engineering and built environment, told Fairfax Media that there was 'very limited use of live animals in teaching and training.'

Presently there are several handshapes that we use to articulate our feelings by text, including: “peace”, “thumbs up”, “thumbs down”, “face palm”, “fist bump," "a-okay" and several others.
“I Love You” is one sign expressed in American Sign Language (ASL) and it has moved into the mainstream with wider universal understanding and acceptance among those who sign and those who do not (yet). Up until now, the best folks can do to recreate it by symbol is _\,,/ and that really doesn't do the meaning justice.
The "I Love You" sign is an informal way of expressing a number of positive emotions, ranging from general esteem and admiration to love for the recipient of the sign. Source: Wiki
Of course, the “I Love You” handshape emoji would be available in all skin tones.
Help us. Let’s make the “I Love You” in ASL emoji official!

VIDEO [CC] - Winnipeg family faces $200K bill to send Deaf son to the United States university.
CBC WINNIPEG - Manitoba family appeals to province to help fund Deaf students to go to only Deaf university in world.
A Manitoba family is calling on the provincial government to better fund schooling for Deaf students after they incurred thousands of dollars of debt for just one year of university for their son.
Last year, 18-year-old Cody Zimmer left his home in Winnipeg to attend Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., the world's only university exclusively for Deaf students.
"My vision of what it might be like was completely obliterated - it was so much more than what I expected," said Cody. "I made so many friends so quickly. I was involved in sports and soccer. It was just such a quick year because it was so exciting. It felt like a blink and it was done."
But his education came with a hefty price tag. One year of undergraduate study cost his family $56,000 (including tuition, dorm fees and health insurance.)
And financial assistance was limited; Cody's application and appeal to have the full cost covered were denied by the province. Instead, he got about $10,000.
"They would support him in going [to Gallaudet], however, they'll only pay at the level of what tuition would be at the University of Manitoba," said Rick Zimmer, Cody's father.
The province used to fund the cost of Deaf students attending Gallaudet completely, but they've since reduced the amount of money students can apply for and instead encourage them to go to a Manitoba school and use interpreters.
Officials with the Manitoba government said the province runs a $1.9-million-a-year program called marketAbilities, "that provides the same amount of funding to a student pursuing training out of province as would be available to the student if they chose to study in Manitoba. Courses that have no equivalent in Manitoba may be fully funded."... See more: CBC News with Closed Captioning
Why fundraising campaign? April 14, 1997 Cody Zimmer was born and from that moment I knew he was bound for greatness. You see Cody is Deaf and he comes from a long line of Deaf family members and I knew from the moment we found out he was Deaf that he was going to change the world.
Cody and his family have spent countless hours advocating for basic human rights that Deaf people are denied. It is now time for Cody to pursue his dream of going to university. Cody wanted to go to a university where everyone shares his culture and language. Unfortunately there is only one university in the world that provides this opporunity That university is Gallaudet and it is located in Washington D.C. VIDEO [CC] - An American Foreign Language film about a former foster child’s journey to find her birth parents and the chaos that ensues.
What is always chasing love? Based on a compilation of true events and uniquely told in American Sign Language (ASL), Italian and English (American and Australian), 'Always Chasing Love' depicts the impact of child abandonment and foster care, the pursuit of family, intimacy and acceptance, and the importance of honest communication in relationships.
It is an arthouse narrative of colliding love stories, triggered by a pained Jennifer Anderson’s passionate and tumultuous journey to find her birth parents. After getting a lead as to her parents' whereabouts, Jennifer's actions cause heartbreak that snowballs into a crime-of-passion. The resulting crime is investigated by the famously meticulous and no-nonsense Detective Simon Willis of the Sign Language Police Department (SLPD).
Why is always chasing love on Kickstarter? Jadolphus Fraser started the journey of making this film with the goal that it be self-funded. Unfortunately, while in the finishing stages of post-production, he suffered the catastrophe that all creators fear the crashing of hard drives, both primary and back-up, simultaneously. Despite being devastated by this calamity, Jadolphus adhered to his commitment to finish the film, and once again embarked upon re-producing and directing this unique film from pre-production to completion. However, his financial resources are now depleted, thus bringing him to Kickstarter. The film is currently in post-production (saved in the cloud and backed up on many hard drives), with the following needed for completion... Read the full story

VIDEO [CC] - Viola Rose Muir: Deaf actors in Hollywood that choose not to or can't speak?
A summary about Viola Rose Muir experience in NYC acting class with 2 of 3 agents expecting her to speak. Quotes: "You know, in Hollywood, the hearing folks, I mean, many Deaf actors can talk, and to receive that feedback was not surprising. Then the casting director said, "Make sure you send these agents a thank you card." I had a thought so I raised my hand to ask Paul a question, "In that thank you card, I wanted to put in the word, 'Audism'."
He was intrigued and asked what it was and I explained that, "Audism is a form of oppression, 'you can speak, you must speak, you must hear, the expectation of Deaf/HOH having to act like a hearing person, oppressing us by thinking that hearing people are better than Deaf or Hard of hearing people, that kind of attitude or way of thinking."

Paul was cautious and said, "Make sure you don't sound so defensive but you can talk and use it as your marketability skill." I said, "I know, right-right, that's fine, sure, but what about those Deaf people who can't talk at all and they want to get into Hollywood and to be in movies. That's not fair. Saying, "Lines are supposed to be spoken", that's not reality, that's not our world today, our world is so diverse, we have different and all kinds of people, they can't just limit by saying, "You must speak only.", that's not realistic.... VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Заслушай се - Campaign from Bulgarian public’s awareness of hearing health.
Заслушай се in Bulgarian, is an information campaign managed by a foundation of the same name which focuses public attention on the challenges people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing face and raises the Bulgarian public’s awareness of hearing health.
Our team is made up entirely of volunteers. Some are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, others cannot but lend an ear to the cause. Our common goal is to ensure equal access for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing to information, education and professional development as well as their appropriate involvement in public life.
We work to raise the awareness of hearing health and will provide information about the dangers of noise pollution and the ways to protect one’s hearings.
At present, more than 120,000 people in Bulgaria have various degrees of hearing loss. A large part of them rely mainly on sign language as a means of daily communication and the need for professional sign language interpreters is ever growing. This is why we will support the creation of a modern national centre for sign language and services.
The Listen up campaign team works to improve the access to information and communication through the use of information technologies by all people with hearing loss. Visit us for more details http://zaslushaise.bg.

VIDEO [CC] - Public education and awareness: Why bed bugs are making a comeback in the United States and United Kingdom.
These tiny parasites, better known as bedbugs, have spread through Los Angeles, New York and London over the past 60 years, Americans and Britishers thought they had vanquished bed bugs forever. They were wrong.
To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.
Bed bugs have been an insanity-inducing staple of American life ever since the Mayflower. In 1926, infestations in hotels and apartments were so common that experts couldn't recall a time when they weren't a problem. People absolutely hated being bitten in the night by these tenacious bloodsuckers, but the bugs were seemingly impossible to eradicate.
Then, in 1939, a Swiss chemist named Paul Hermann Muller discovered the pesticide DDT, which proved staggeringly effective at killing insects. And, for decades thereafter, DDT and other chemical pesticides helped keep America's homes and hotels bed bug free.
But it didn't last. Since 2000, a new strain of pesticide-resistant bed bugs has been popping up all around the nation in 2009, there were 10,000 reported complaints in New York City alone. Apartment dwellers were waking up with mysterious bites and rashes on their skin and finding peppery flakes around their mattresses (bed bug poop). People couldn’t rid themselves of bed bugs no matter how often they did laundry or threw out their mattresses. Once the bugs invaded, it seemed, almost nothing can stop them.
The bed bug invasion is a skin-crawling story recounted in Brooke Borel’s riveting new book, Infested: How the Bed Bug Infiltrated Our Bedroom and Took Over the World (the book was partially funded by the Alfred Sloan Foundation). I called Borel, a science journalist, to hear more about how bed bugs made a comeback, why they’re so tenacious, and whether we might ever get rid of them again.
Brad Plumer: I’d half assumed bed bugs were a very recent phenomenon, so it was fascinating to see that even the ancient Egyptians were trying to cast spells to ward them off.
Brooke Borel: Yeah, one thing that really struck me was the similarities throughout history. When the bed bug resurgence happened in the last 15 years, we had all these newspaper articles saying, oh my god, they’re in the movie theaters, there in this place, in that place. But when I went back and read some of the historical material, that’s always been the case.
You can go back and read descriptions of these old beds with jars around the legs that contained paraffin to ward off bed bugs. And that’s just an old school version of these little traps you can buy today to put under your bed and capture the bugs. It’s just an old story that’s been repeating itself forever.
BP: Now, there was this 60-year period after World War II where we’d vanquished bed bugs. How did that happen?
