Gallaudet University Student Drug Bust

VIDEO: Gallaudet University student arrested on drug distribution charges.

The Washington Post - Police have arrested and charged a Gallaudet University student with intending to distribute drugs after authorities said they found two pounds of marijuana some baked into fudge and cookies in her dorm room on the Northeast Washington campus.

A D.C. Superior Court judge on Monday released Molly E. Sachs to a drug treatment center and ordered her to appear for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 31, according to online court records.

Sachs is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, a felony.

A university spokeswoman confirmed that Sachs is a student and said the school is cooperating with authorities. Statistics show that in 2011, the latest available, three students at the school for the Deaf were arrested on drug charges in dorms, and 147 were referred to campus judicial review for drug-related issues.

The school has about 1,100 undergraduates. D.C. police say in court documents that a school security officer had been notified by a resident assistant about a strong odor of marijuana from a dorm room... Cochlear Implants Surgery To Help Deaf Boy In Limbo

Deaf News: Cochlear Implants surgery to help Florida Deaf boy in limbo.

MONROE, GA. - Life-changing surgery to help a Walton County boy who is considered legally Deaf is in limbo. The family’s insurance company denied coverage for cochlear implants, leaving the family few options.

“If he wants to be able to read, write and learn, and have friends; be a kid, he needs to have the surgery,” Brian Rubin told Channel 2’s Rachel Stockman.

Carson Rubin, 5, suffers from auditory neuropathy. He has tried several hearing aids, but so far, nothing has worked. Doctors say the best opportunity for him to live a “hearing” life, would be if he got the implants.

“We pay for insurance. We have coverage and you expect the thing you need will be covered,” Shay Rubin said.

The Rubin’s insurance, Coventry Health Insurance of Georgia, said that the surgery was excluded under their small group plan. The surgery costs about $250,000 for both ears... Read more: http://wsbtv.com/news/news/local/life-changing-surgery-help-deaf-boy-limbo/

Cochlear Implants Are A Form Of Child Abuse - On the surface, cochlear implants sound like a promising medical solution to the problems surrounding hearing loss or total deafness. A cochlear implant uses existing nerves and electronic signals to override damaged auditory nerves, thus restoring a sense of hearing to the recipient. However, this technology has also caused serious divisions within the Deaf community concerning the hearing society's position on deafness in general. A number of members of the Deaf community choose to view their Deaf status as a subculture of society, in the same sense as a Hispanic person would embrace his or her Hispanic culture.

Deafness is not a handicap per se, but a shared experience which gives the Deaf community its unique cultural identity. To members of this Deaf subculture, cochlear implants are considered disrespectful and insulting, since the medical community views deafness as a handicap which must be treated or corrected: http://www.cochlearwar.com/myths_and_facts.html.

Certain factions of the Deaf community also believe a Deaf person's ability to live a full and meaningful life is not compromised by his or her deafness, so the suggestion that cochlear implants provide advantages over a Deaf lifestyle is shortsighted and insensitive.

Many Deaf people cope very well with their deafness, learning sign language and lip reading and adapting their work and home environments to accommodate their loss of hearing. Perhaps the cochlear implant is only for the MONEY as the dirty business? Cochlear Business Is Dirty Business! with captions.

Another controversy surrounding cochlear implants and the Deaf community is the safety and effectiveness of the procedure. Cochlear implantation involves major surgery in an area of the body filled with delicate nerves which control facial movements. One mistake during surgery could cause long-term facial paralysis, also and it is might be a risk to cochlear implant users where the thunderstorms approaching, Cochlear Implant User Struck By Lightning.

Cochlear implants can also destroy any remaining healthy auditory nerves, which means a Deaf person could lose all remnants of natural hearing which may have helped them adjust to a Deaf lifestyle. Cochlear implants require the recipient to undergo significant fine-tuning sessions, and success can vary widely from recipient to recipient. The controversy over cochlear implants often pits hearing parents against Deaf parents when it comes to raising their Deaf children in a hearing world. Many Deaf parents would prefer to raise their Deaf child in a Deaf culture, including the use of sign language and lip reading. Hearing parents who are not familiar with the Deaf community may opt for the cochlear implant surgery to correct their Deaf child's perceived handicap, Cochlear Implant Cruelty.

The result may be a Deaf child who can partially hear, or a hearing child with a Deaf cultural heritage. Either way, the child may face social ostracism from both communities if the parents do not consider the long-term effects of cochlear implant surgery. Not all members of Deaf community view cochlear implants as an unnecessary procedure, but hearing parents facing a difficult decision concerning a Deaf child may want to research both sides of the controversy before committing to cochlear implant surgery. What Is the Leading Cause of Child Abandonment?

History of Abandonment/Abuse - History tends to repeat itself and this is especially true of abuse and neglect patterns. Parents who experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment at the hands of someone when they were a child are more likely to repeat the pattern and abuse, neglect or abandon their own children. UNICEF estimates that 13 million children worldwide have been abandoned by both parents for various reasons, abuse and neglect among them. Watch the video in behavioral problems for not learning in sign language and oppression: Alone In A Hearing World.

Handicap/Illness of Child - A child born with a handicap, birth defect or chronic illness has a higher chance of being abandoned by their parents. Since infants and children are needy to begin with, parents living with a child with a chronic condition may not be able to cope with the increased demands of their child. Like parents who live in poverty, these parents believe their child will be better off without them and abandon these child to the foster care system or to live with other relatives.

Behavioral Problems - All children experience behavior problems as they grow and learn about the world around them. For some parents, their child's misbehavior is a source of extreme stress they are unable to handle. Other parents have children with extreme, even criminal, behavior that they are unable or unwilling to control. These children are at an increased risk of being removed from their parent's care or having their parents find alternative placement situations for them: Alone In A Hearing World.

Gallaudet Community Mourns Mother and Daughter Killed in Falls Church House Fire

VIDEO: Gallaudet University community mourns Deaf mother and daughter killed in Falls Church house fire.

WASHINGTON - Hot pink and yellow not black were the colors of choice for Laura Snyder-Gardner and Mary Ann Gardner’s memorial service Sunday.

The colors were bright and positive and radiated energy, exactly how those who loved them remembered the mother and daughter, who died last week in a Falls Church house fire.

Witnesses Say Falls Church Fire Moved Through House Quickly.

Friends, family members and faculty turned into a sea of pink and yellow Mary Ann’s favorite colors as they gathered at Gallaudet University in Northeast Washington.

They fondly recalled Snyder-Gardner’s generous and nurturing spirit, with many students calling the Gallaudet math professor a “second mom.” And they mourned the loss of Mary Ann’s “radiant smile,” which friends and classmates said was infectious even from afar... Two people are confirmed dead after a raging inferno destroyed a Falls Church home Wednesday.

Capt. William Moreland, a spokesman with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said firefighters were called to the home in the 3100 block of Manor Rd. The entire single-level ranch-style home was completely engulfed when crews arrived.

Moreland said they will release the identities of the victims once family has been notified.

Steve Klass, who lives next door to the destroyed home, said he was awakened by a loud roaring sound at about 3:30 a.m. He said a woman who lived at the home, who was Deaf, could be heard screaming... Deaf Lifeguard Be ‘Qualified’ Under The ADA ?

Deaf News: The Deaf lifeguard be ‘Qualified’ under the Americans with Disabilities Act ?

OAKLAND COUNTY, MI -- What would you do if you were hiring a lifeguard for a community wave pool and the applicant was Deaf, but he was also certified as a lifeguard? A new court ruling this month shows how mistakes made in assessing the applicant's medical condition can leave an employer drowning in litigation.

Case in Point: Nicholas Keith, 22, was born Deaf and communicates using sign language. He also uses a cochlear implant that helps him detect noises, such as whistles and people calling for help. Keith received his junior lifeguard certification and then successfully completed lifeguard training. (A Michigan county provided a sign-language interpreter to relay verbal instructions to Keith during both training programs.)

Keith then applied for a lifeguard position at the county's wave pool, requesting that a sign-language interpreter be present to relay verbal directions during staff meetings. The county offered Keith the job, conditioned on his passing a pre-employment physical. The doctor failed him, citing his inability to hear. Plus, the county’s safety and risk management consultants expressed concerns over Keith being unable to do the job, despite numerous accommodations the county was offering. So the county rescinded the job offer... Read More.

Deaf Lifeguard's Disability Claims Against Oakland County Go To Jury.

The Sixth Circuit has reversed the decision of a lower court and held that a Deaf individual should be permitted to proceed to trial on his claim that a prospective employer discriminated against him on the basis of disability by failing to hire him as a lifeguard. Keith v. County of Oakland, (6th Cir. Jan. 10, 2013).

In reviving the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) claim, the Court found that a jury should be permitted to determine whether the individual was otherwise qualified to be a lifeguard, with or without accommodation, that is, whether hearing is an essential function of the job and, if so, whether reasonable accommodations could have been made... 911 Staff Will Text Message With Deaf Canadians

OTTAWA - Canadians who have hearing or speech problems will soon be able to send text messages to 911 services.

Other Canadians, however, must continue to communicate with 911 services over the phone, says Canada's telecommunications regulator.

By Jan. 24, 2014, all telephone and wireless companies must upgrade their networks to support text messaging communication with Canadians who have hearing and speech impairments. The service may become available before then in areas where the upgrades are completed early.

"Services such as 911 are critical to the health and safety of all Canadians,” said Jean-Pierre Blais, chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in a statement Thursday.

“This initiative is a perfect example of how technology can be used to improve access to 911 services for Canadians with disabilities." ... Read more: http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/01/24/tech-911-texting.html

Deaf Hunter Crawls From Forest After Accident

VIDEO: Deaf hunter crawls out of woods, survives serious leg injury after deer stand falls.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Reporter interview with Joe, who is Deaf, tells his story of falling out of a tree and breaking his leg during a solo hunting trip. It took him 12 hours to crawl from the forest and another several to find aid.

Joe Liuzza got home alive, just barely. Through grit and determination, he was able to win his battle against nature and pull himself and his mangled leg out of a swamp following a hunting-related accident near Robersonville that turned into a 14-hour ordeal.

Liuzza, 47, was home temporarily from the hospital on Dec. 13 and feeling a little more relaxed as he recounted the details of his harrowing experience.

It was easy to see in his features and by the steel cage wrapped around his right lower leg, rods poking through the skin to hold the disconnected portions of his bones in place that he had been through a struggle that he and his wife, Delia, owner of The Tipsy Teapot in Greenville, would never forget.

Deaf Cambodians, A Punishment ?

VIDEO [CC] - A punishment for being Deaf in the state of Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH - According certain beliefs in Cambodia, any disabilities is the result of a bad karma due to bad actions in a previous life.

The NGO Aide et Action runs a project which aims at changing people's behaviours, mentalities and integrate Deaf and Blind children into society. Through education, Aide et Action fights against exclusion and discrimination.

In Cambodia, the percentage of the population living with disabilities is one of the highest in the world. At least 650,000 Cambodians live with a disability, and the exact count may be as high as 1.4 million.

The incidence of disability is also expected to increase in the future. Despite the fact that many Cambodians have at least one disability, the country does not have adequate legal provisions to protect the human rights of people with disabilities.

There are no comprehensive laws that address disability issues. The few existing laws provide only implicit protections and some directly discriminate against people with disabilities... Read more: http://digital.law.washington.edu/dspace-law/handle/1773.1/521

Kebebasan Menurut Saya

Menurut saya, Kebebasan adalah
hak manusia untuk mencapai kebahagiaan individu
tanpa merusak kebebasan individu lain.

Kebebasan merupakan tempat bergantungnya
ketinggian harga diri manusia. Setiap kebebasan

Itulah kebebasan.

TAPI... walaupun kita memiliki KEBEBASAN dalam
memilh respon untuk setiap kejadian, saya sarankan
kita tetap fokus memilih pada KEBEBASAN yang
bersifat POSITIF.

Rangkullah kehidupan.
Rengkuhlah cinta baru.
Penuhilah tawa, keriangan di setiap hari-hari M
Bukalah hati untuk kemungkinan-kemungkinan yang baik:
rezeki, pekerjaan, orang-orang, lingkungan baru

Kita memiliki berbagai macam kebebasan,

Deaf people in Russia received a late, but very precious Christmas present when Russian Sign Language was formally recognised by the Russian government on the 30th December.

The breakthrough came after years of campaigning by the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, including their President Valery Rukhledev. The development led to a very special new year's celebration for Deaf people in the country.

The good news from Russia comes nearly ten years after British Sign Language was recognised by the government in this country - in March 2003.

The pair told doctors that they were unable to bear the thought of not being able to see each other again.

Facing blindness, two Deaf twin brothers elected to commit assisted suicide in Belgium via lethal injection. This assisted suicide case is unusual - neither man was terminally ill nor suffering unbearable pain.

Profound Audism At Gallaudet University

VIDEO [ASL] - Audism at Gallaudet University ? You will decide after watch this vlog.

Out of the entire world, within the walls of Gallaudet University Deaf Space. Profound Audism occurred. SimComm destroys both ASL and English. Audism also destroys respect for Deaf people and their Deaf World especially at Gallaudet University.

I experienced profound Audism in Gallaudet University out of all places in the world. A place where the environment is safe for all Deaf people. This intrusion of SimComm and voicing is very irritating. I was not even angry at all at first. I wanted to give positive exposure to the fact it's not a good manner and that it is very disrespectful to Deaf people in general when hearing people SimComm, talking with the voice, using cell phones, etc.

I was hoping for dialogue and discussion to bring better understanding, respect and knowledge, but instead, this hearing student who claim to be a Coda got up and yelled at me with such profound venom, disrespect and hate. Such display of profound oppression has left me shocked and loss of words and thoughts. It even affected my friends at the table.

What hurts me more is that there are other Deaf people there who agreed with me, but sat and did nothing to stand up against Audism. I was even more shocked with the level of apathy. Are we so oppressed and thinking it's so difficult to fight it and we give up and just succumb to it?

I need your help to put an end to Audism from hearing students and put an end to apathy of Deaf people or their lack of courage to stand up for ASL and Deaf World.

My vlog is not an attempt to degrade or belittle other people most especially the hearing group/Coda I was referring about. My point was to bring this up to discussion and to raise awareness of Audism and acknowledgement of Deaf Space at Gallaudet University.

Please remain respectful and civil to each other in hopes we all meet together in harmony and mutual respect. Finally, I truly want to thank those who have shown support and encouragement. Thank you. Shane.

Deaf People May Have Trouble Reading

VIDEO [CC] - A new reason for why the Deaf may have trouble reading, health report.

Deaf people may have no trouble communicating words through American Sign Language, or ASL. But studies of ASL users show that the average Deaf adult reads at the level of a nine-year-old. The explanation has always been that this is because they never learned to connect letters with sounds. But a recent study shows that Deaf readers are just like other people learning to read in a second language.

Linguist Jill Morford led the study. She says: "The assumption has always been that the problems with reading were educational issues with what's the right way to teach reading when you can't associate sounds with letters. But what we're finding is that all this time we've been ignoring the fact that they're actually learning a new language." Ms. Morford is a professor at the University of New Mexico and part of a research center at Gallaudet University in Washington.

Most students at Gallaudet are Deaf; the center studies how Deaf people learn and use language. Professor Morford says signers are like English learners whose first language uses a different alphabet. She says: "Anyone who has a first language that has a written system that's very different than English, like Arabic or Chinese or Russian, knows that learning to recognize and understand words in English is much more challenging than if you already speak a language that uses the same orthography. "The orthography is the written system and spelling of a language. Of course, with signers, their first language has no written system at all, just hand gestures.

Gallaudet professor Thomas Allen explains what effect this has on reading. He says: "There's a silent hearing going on ... when a hearing person reads a word. When a deaf person reads a word, there's not. They see the word and there's some kind of an orthographic representation.

And some of the research in our center has shown that when Deaf readers read an English word, it activates their sign representations of those words." Signers can face the same problems as other bilingual people. Their brains have to choose between two languages all the time. Take the words "paper" and "movie." Their spelling and meaning are not at all similar. But, as Professor Allen points out, the signs for them are. To make the sign for paper," he says, "you hold one hand flat and you just lightly tap it with a flat palm on the other hand, and you do that a couple times and that means paper." Movie is very similar, except the other hand "lightly moves back and forth as if it were a flickering image on a screen."

Deaf Children 'Blessing or Curse ?'

VIRAL VIDEO: Documentary Film: Deaf Children 'Blessing or Curse?'

A film by Sandrine Ngnasoke exploring the treatment of hearing impaired children in the United Kingdom compared to Cameroon.

Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.
