Deaf News: New Jersey's Passaic Cab Company accused of ignoring Deaf customer must pay $42K.



PATERSON, NJ -- Patch: Nicole Perkins contacted the company 3 times while waiting in heavy snow but was hung up and told to stop calling, officials said.



A Passaic County company who ignored and hung up on a Deaf woman's attempts to get cab during a snowstorm in 2014 was hit with a $42,000 judgement, state Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino announced Monday.



Superior Court Judge Thomas J. LaConte ruled that Clifton Taxi and Limousine Inc. violated the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and unlawfully denied service to Nicole Perkins, who is Deaf.



Perkins, of Jamaica, New York, contacted the company three times through a telecommunications relay service during a state of emergency and snowstorm in January 2014. Perkins was waiting for a bus that was delayed in Clifton and called the company, according to the complaint the state Division of Civil Rights filed against Clifton Taxi.



The relay service allows Perkins to make calls by sending text messages from her cell phone to a relay operator.



An operator called the company, advising them that she was assisting a Deaf Caller, but was hung up on twice. On the third call, someone at Clifton Taxi picked up and allegedly responded, "Please stop calling" and then hung up, the complaint said.



The company must pay Perkins $6,000 for emotional distress, $20,000 in penalties, and $16,000 in attorney fees.



Under federal law, all telecommunications providers are required to provide telecommunications relay services. Through these services, an individual who is Deaf, Hard of Hearing or has a speech disability can communicate in real time by telephone.



“Setting aside for a moment the egregious nature of the circumstances - a deaf woman being hung up on three times as she sought a ride to escape an oncoming blizzard - the fact is that businesses and other places of public accommodation can’t simply ignore a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person trying to communicate through a relay service,” Attorney General Porrino said in a statement. "This is an important outcome, because it puts service providers and other businesses on notice that we’re serious about protecting the rights of persons with hearing and other disabilities, and that we will hold accountable anyone who fails to follow the law.”

Rife with awkwardness and miscommunication, and keenly attuned to the reality of what a mixed blessing technology can be, the story would work well as a stand-enough short; as such, it’s easily the most promising evidence here that Lawson the writer-director may yet have bigger and better things ahead of him... VIDEO [CC] - Entire neighbourhood learns sign language so they can talk to Deaf man and it moves him to tears.



This video shows the heartwarming moment a Deaf man realised an entire neighbourhood has learned sign language just for him.



Muharrem is shown wandering through his neighbourhood with his sister Ozlem meeting strangers who surprise him with their communication skills.



In the footage, filmed in Instanbul, Turkey, the siblings set out for for what Muharrem thinks is just going to be a normal day. But when they come across a man in a local shop who unexpectedly greets him with sign language, he knows the day is going to be anything but ordinary.

In one scene Muharrem bumps into a woman who apologises to him in sign language, and when they get into a cab, the driver signs "hello" to them. They are then dropped off in a public square where a group of neighbours greet the pair in sign language. Eventually Muharrem is moved to tears at the number of people willing and able to communicate with him.



The video was filmed using secret cameras for an advert organised by Samsung to promote its video call centre for the hearing impaired. The firm teamed up with an ad agency and spent a month setting up cameras around his neighborhood. SOURCE

Dispatcher Hailed Hero For Helping Deaf Woman's Mother

VIDEO: NASHVILLE, TN - A Clarksville woman is grateful to a 911 dispatcher who got help to her Deaf mother Monday night. Lisa Prichard lives in Clarksville and was home when her mother texted her that something was wrong.



Prichard was able to video call her mother Joy Gournaris, 68, at Gournaris' Antioch home. "She was confused, she didn't understand what was going on and was getting ready to pass out," Prichard said.



Prichard knew if she tried to drive to her mother's home from Clarksville it would take her an hour. She was also concerned because it appeared her mother was having a stroke and every second counted.

Prichard kept her mother on video phone and called 911 from her Clarksville home. Clarksville's 911 center transferred her to Nashville where 911 Dispatcher Lori Bentley took over the phone call.



"While, I'm communicating with sign language with my mother I was talking to the dispatcher," Prichard said. "I had to really be calm and think about what I was saying. I wanted to cry and scream, but I stayed calm for my mother."
