Six-Year-Old Deaf Schoolboy On ISIS Hit List

Deaf News: A six-year-old schoolboy facing deportation has begged to stay in the United Kingdom because he is on the ISIS hit list for being Deaf.

LONDON, UK -- The Sun - Lawand Hamadamin fled Iraq with his parents and brother last year after learning that the sick terrorist organisation had ordered the killing of disabled kids by lethal injection.

There were also rumours Al-Qaeda and Islamic State were recruiting young people with disabilities to become suicide bombers.

Mum Golbahar Hussein, 33, and dad Rebwar Golbahayh, 35, set off on a treacherous journey across Europe with Lawand, who was born profoundly Deaf and unable to communicate, and his nine-year-old brother Rawa.

In order to protect Lawand's cochlear implant during his perilous trip across the water, his parents put a plastic bag on his head.

They then spent a year living in a French refugee camp before they came to Britain and settled in Derby.

Lawand got a place at the Royal School for the Deaf in the city, where he has learned to communicate via British Sign Language.

His parents thanked the school for "saving their son's life" and he has continued to thrive with his teachers saying he is making "extraordinary progress."

But this week, his shocked parents were told the devastating news by the Home Office that they are now likely to be deported to Germany and warned they'll be given a week to leave on January 9.

Staff at the non-maintained residential special school say they are heartbroken at the prospect of Lawand leaving.

They are now working with solicitors supported by charity DeafKidz International in a bid to reverse the decision by the Home Office.

Head teacher Helen Shepherd said: "Lawand's family are understandably devastated that they are being deported, especially since he has made such extraordinary progress in the few months he has been with us.

"When Lawand arrived at the school in September, he had no means of communicating with anyone - even his own family.

"In the very short time he has been with us, Lawand has made exceptional progress.

"He is signing incredibly well and we have been so proud of him - he has made good friends, has grown in confidence and exceeded all our expectations.

"It is inconceivable that he should be removed from the school when he has only just begun.

"Lawand's cochlear implant processor has broken and so he has no functioning hearing aid yet.

"He has an appointment this week so that he can get a referral to the Nottingham Cochlear Implant Centre.

"There is little chance that he will get that appointment before the New Year, by which time he could have gone."

Mysterious Ancient 'Pyramid' Found In Antarctica

VIDEO [CC] - Weird News: Google Earth images of Antarctica have revealed what look like pyramids, lost civilisations to aliens?

Heavy com share an article: Tonight, Ancient Aliens’ premiere episode for the new season is scheduled to be about “Pyramids of Antarctica.” But are there really any pyramids in this snowy, icy world? Unfortunately, rumors that circulated several years ago were later debunked. Will Ancient Aliens add any new information to the mix?

Here’s what you need to know.

Several years ago, the Internet was filled with stories about explorers who found pyramids in Antarctica. The most frequently repeated story was tracked down as originating from a website called Voice of Russia, later renamed Sputnik News. You can read one of the first stories, from 2013, here.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

According to the rumors, a team of European and American scientists had found three ancient pyramids, two which were 16 kilometers inland and one near the coast. But the details in the stories were always very sparse. Websites included pictures, such as this article, and a link to an article on ScienceRay, which purportedly included photos, was often posted (which no longer works.) The story traveled across the Internet, but it wasn’t verifiable. The names of the explorers weren’t shared and more details were never available.

Back in 2012, a discussion about the articles appeared on a Google message board here, where one poster noticed something interesting. He said the story had circulated for a very long time, but someone had recently “republished” the story with three images. He noted that the sources of the images, which appeared with the story, were not of pyramids in Antarctica. One photo was from International Mountain Guides and one was from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. The third, according to another submitter, may have been of the Schatz Ridge near Sentinel Range.

Some theorize that the photos used are likely of “glacial horns,” such as the Matterhorn which is on the border between Switzerland and Italy in Europe.

Is An Ancient City hidden under Antarctica? - Could Antarctica have actually been home to an ancient civilization?

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Those who want to believe in the pyramid theory point to the idea that Antarctica may not have always been covered in ice. They sometimes mention the ancient Piri Reis map and the theory that it shows the coastline without ice. The Piri Reis map is a world map made in 1513 based on military intelligence from the Ottoman admiral Piri Reis. About 1/3 of the map still survives. Some claim that it shows prehistoric exploration of Antarctica, along with notes that the climate was warm. But other experts dispute this claim and say that it either depicts a South American coast in that region or is just a guess and not based on genuine knowledge. Bad Archaeology addressed the idea of ancient civilizations in Antarctica back in 2007.

Most scientists disagree with the idea that Antarctica has pyramids or lost civilizations. But you’ll likely still find romantics who point to the Piri Reis map and other findings and insist that what is deemed impossible might not be.

Why Deaf Americans Fear President Trump

Deaf News: VICE share an article by Deaf novelist Sara Nović explains why thousands of the Deaf community fears US President Donald J. Trump.

WASHINGTON -- VICE: "'All men are created equal.' Well, it's not true." That's President-elect Donald Trump, a clip unearthed for a PBS documentary that shone a light on, among other things, Trump's apparent belief that some people are born smart, born to be successful, born with what he has called "the winning gene."

"The [Trump] family subscribes to a racehorse theory of human development," Trump biographer Michael D'Antonio told the team behind the Frontline documentary The Choice. "They believe that there are superior people, and that if you put together the genes of a superior woman and a superior man, you get a superior offspring."

This belief, that certain genes make better people, is an echo of eugenics, a racist, pseudoscientific philosophy that aims to "improve" the human race by breeding out supposedly bad characteristics. When it became popular in the late 19th century, eugenics became the driving force behind a number of atrocities against many minority groups, including the Deaf community. The Nazis were the most infamous eugenicists, but there were many other believers. Alexander Graham Bell used eugenics to propose a ban on sign language and deaf intramarriage in his 1884 paper, Upon the Formation of a Deaf Variety of the Human Race." Deaf people were institutionalized and some forcibly sterilized for years afterward; Deaf education was upended and students' hands were literally tied down to prevent them from signing. Bell's ideas about the superiority of oralism over bilingual schooling remain embedded in our education and legislative systems, despite having been scientifically debunked.

Today, many groups are worried about how a Trump presidency will affect them. But though the Deaf and Disabled communities were not the focus of much campaign rhetoric, it seems clear that Trump has contempt for people like me. Trump has publicly mocked a journalist with a joint condition, reportedly called Deaf actress and Celebrity Apprentice contestant Marlee Matlin "retarded," and perpetuated the false notion that vaccines cause autism. There have been multiple lawsuits against his properties for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Writing for the LA Times in October, disability advocate David Perry called Trump the "most ableist presidential nominee in modern American political history."

Policy-wise, the future for deaf people is as murky as it is for everyone else, as Trump constantly introduces and walks back proposals varying in levels of moral reprehensibility, legality, and feasibility. According to his most recent statements, his plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and "re-establish high-risk pools" (as his website puts it) would result in loss of healthcare coverage for many Deaf and Disabled people whose conditions can be classified as preexisting. Deaf and Disabled people who depend on Medicaid for insurance or medical devices not covered by traditional health insurance are also fearful, as Trump's rollback of ACA's Medicaid expansion could affect the approximately 7 million people who have gained coverage under it.

Deaf and disabled people have also voiced concern about a potentially weaker ADA under Trump. The ADA is enforced by the Department of Justice's civil rights division, and given Trump's properties' alleged ADA violations and the traditional conservative stance against government spending and oversight, cuts seem likely, leaving us at the whim of private companies' bottom lines.

The ADA bars employers from discriminatory hiring practices and protects our rights to "reasonable accommodations" like closed captions and sign language interpreters at work and school. For the wider disability community, the ADA ensures things like wheelchair ramps, elevators, and handicapped parking and bathrooms. An ADA weakened by lack of oversight and money could well mean continued police brutality against people with disabilities. In the case of Deaf people specifically, law enforcement already has troubling record of arresting and detaining people without providing interpreters, or even a pen and paper, to explain the reason for arrest or Mirandize them. Unarmed Deaf people, whom police misinterpret to be aggressive or using gang signs, have been killed with impunity—Daniel Harris, Edward P. Miller, and John T. Williams are among the more famous cases.

Questions of discrimination and accessibility if the ADA becomes less of priority in a Trump DOJ also extend to the education sector. Schools for the Deaf, branches of their state public school systems, are likely to be endangered by budget cuts and funding shifts from the public sector to charter and voucher systems, which Trump endorses. Deaf schools are often among the first to be cut from struggling districts, with Deaf students instead sent to mainstream schools where they are unable to communicate directly with their teachers and peers. Further, Deaf schools traditionally serve as hubs for Deaf culture, providing independent living and job training for post-grads, offering (often free) American Sign Language (ASL) classes to interested locals, leading research in linguistics and special education, and hosting social and cultural events—all resources left defunct upon the closure of a Deaf school.

And where fears of budget cuts and eugenics intersect, some worry about the threat of mandatory cochlear implantation, via which Deaf students could theoretically be integrated into hearing schools at a lower cost. Though it sounds extreme, it's not any larger a violation of one's individual medical choices than Trump and Pence's assault on women's reproductive rights. (The idea that the decision not to implant one's child is evidence of neglect has already surfaced in family court, though so far the argument hasn't been successful.)

Finally, as hate speech against racial and religious minorities spikes across the country, Deaf and disabled people have also experienced post-election hate speech in the name of the president-elect. In one example, Lena Van Manen, a CODA (child of Deaf adults who is a native sign language user) and a coordinator at the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education in Indiana, wrote on Facebook about being confronted while facetiming with a Deaf friend in Starbucks. Used to people staring while she signed, she ignored the glare from a man across the store until he got in her face and screamed, "This is white America now. Take your retarded self and go somewhere else."

We can't know for sure what Trump will do, but if he does what he says he wants to do, it will hurt us. His words already have.

'The Simpsons' Predicted Trump's Presidency

VIDEO: Weird News - The Simpsons correctly predicted a Donald Trump would be President 16 years ago in an episode set in the near future.

HOLLYWOOD -- Today The Simpsons saw the most absurd prediction in its 27-year history come true – correctly forecasting Donald Trump would be president, as seen on ‘The Simpsons’ Have Predicted The Future.

In an episode aired in 2000, the show portrays a grown-up Lisa Simpson as the incumbent, who refers to “inheriting quite a budget crunch from President Trump”. Is it confidence or illuminati?

The uncanny prediction occurred in Bart To The Future, an episode revealing how the lives of its central characters could turn out.

It later referenced his real-life run for the presidency again last year in a short clip called Trumptastic Voyage - though by this stage his candidacy was more commonly expected.

Earlier this year Simpsons creator Matt Groening told The Guardian they used Trump because he was "the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of".

He added: "That's still true, it's beyond satire. If by chance he gets elected, which I doubt highly will happen, I think we’ll suddenly be very inspired."

Dan Greaney, a long-time writer for the show, said it was a "warning to America".

He told The Hollywood Reporter: "That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane."

Marlee Matlin Slams Donald Trump ‘Retarded’

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Deaf actor Marlee Matlin hits back at Donald Trump over ‘retarded’ comment: ‘it is unacceptable’

NEW YORK CITY -- TIME: "The term is abhorrent and should never be used"

Marlee Matlin, an actor who is Deaf, said she was “deeply” upset by reports that Donald Trump repeatedly called her “retarded” when she appeared on the Celebrity Apprentice.

“The term is abhorrent and should never be used. The fact that we are talking about this during a very important moment in American history has upset me deeply,” Matlin said in a statement on Friday.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Three staffers on the reality TV show, who requested anonymity due to non-disclosure agreements, told the Daily Beast that Trump often treated Matlin with disrespect and called her “retarded,” both behind her back and in front of her. A former Apprentice contestant also told People that Trump made sexual comments to Matlin and other women on the show.

“I am Deaf. There are millions of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people like me, in the United States and around the world who face discrimination and misunderstanding like this on a daily basis. It is unacceptable,” said Matlin, who has indicated her support for Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign.

“As a person who is Deaf, as a woman, as a mom, as a wife, as an actor, I have a voice. And I’m using that voice to make myself heard… and vote.”

Trump previously faced scrutiny early in the campaign for mocking a New York Times reporter who suffers from a congenital joint condition.

America’s Creepy Clown Craze, Explained - Vox

VIDEO [CC] - Weird News: Clown sighting pranks have happened since the 1980s - but never quite like this in America.

WASHINGTON -- The professional clowning community has a serious image problem in America. In recent weeks, stories of so-called “creepy clowns” and “killer clowns” have been popping up all over local newscasts across the country and disseminated through social media. While parents and educators express concern for the safety of children, the ones in real danger may be the clowns themselves.

In 2016, anyone who dares to leave the house dressed as a clown may become the victim of a vigilante or even an angry mob. Vox attempts to sort through the madness in an informative seven-minute mini-documentary called “America’s Creepy Clown Craze, Explained.” Produced and narrated by Christophe Haubursin, the video not only explores the current wave of clown-related pranks but also the longstanding historical roots behind the current, widespread anti-clown sentiments. Here's the mini-documentary with closed captions.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Some may assume that the public’s fear of clowns, or coulrophobia, began with John Wayne Gacy, the Illinois serial killer who performed at charity events and children’s parties in the guise of “Pogo The Clown.” But Haubursin traces the problem back to the 19th century, when a man named Joseph Grimaldi was “the most popular entertainer in England.” Grimaldi’s costuming and makeup set the precedent for modern day clowns, but his private life was marred by depression and alcoholism. Writer Charles Dickens immortalized Grimaldi’s private struggles, first by editing his memoirs, then by including a “disturbed clown character” based on Grimaldi in his 1837 novel The Pickwick Papers. That changed the public’s perception of clowns in general.

Today, there are few positive clown role models in popular culture. The two jesters best known to the public are Batman’s murderous nemesis, Joker, and The Simpsons’ “morally, financially, and physically bankrupt” Krusty The Clown. It’s gotten so bad for clowns out there that some are being arrested for “disorderly conduct” simply for wearing their work clothes in public places. Organizations like the World Clown Association may try to redeem the art form, but the damage may be irreparable.

Hurricane Matthew 'Skull' In Eerie Satellite Image

VIDEO: The sinister skull image of Hurricane Matthew spooks the Internet.

WASHINGTON -- CNN: Hurricane Matthew is a monster storm. Now it has a monster image to match. A sinister image of Hurricane Matthew, resembling a human skull, has lit up the Internet. The creepy satellite photo was posted Tuesday by Weather Channel senior meteorologist Stu Ostro as the hurricane made landfall in Haiti.

The image shows the hurricane through an infrared camera lens. It's been tweaked to show the storm in apocalyptic colors that accentuate the hurricane's eye and make its teeth look like the comic book character Ghost Rider or the Grinch, some Twitter users suggested.

Credits: Inside Edition

It's creepy, but in a nutshell, CNN meteorologist Judson Jones explains that "basically, scientists use color tables to identify the strongest part of the storm."

In the viral Twitter post, gray, black and red were chosen. Paul Meyer, an atmospheric scientist at NASA's Earth Science Office, told CNN that the skull's "teeth" are cold convective clouds.

Philistine Cemetery May Solve Biblical Mystery

VIDEO [CC] - Ancient philistine cemetery in Israel could solve one of the Bible’s biggest mysteries in the history of mankind.

ASHKELON, ISRAEL -- The Independent News: One of the Bible’s deepest and most important mysteries may be about to be solved.

Archaeologists appear to have found a cemetery belonging to the Philistines for the first time ever, along with the remains of 200 people who were buried there. And together they might help shed light on one the Bible’s most mysterious people.

The scientists have said that the members of the Biblical nation didn’t appear to be “philistines” finding the people buried alongside jewellery and perfumed oil. They will now conduct further tests that could shed yet more light on the maligned people. Those discoveries might be enough to make us rethink today’s use of the word philistine, which tends to refer to uncultured people who don’t know enough about the arts.

"The Philistines have had some bad press, and this will dispel a lot of myths," said Lawrence Stager, an architect who has led the expedition that found the cemetery since 1985. "The Bible's Buried Secrets" from the KPBS.org TV show.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Until now, most of our understanding of the Philistines came from the things that they have left behind. But now for the first time we have found their remains.

"After decades of studying what Philistines left behind, we have finally come face to face with the people themselves," said Daniel M. Master, professor of archaeology at Wheaton College and one of the leaders of the excavation. "With this discovery we are close to unlocking the secrets of their origins."

The discovery was finally unveiled Sunday at the close of a 30-year excavation by the Leon Levy Expedition, a team of archaeologists from Harvard University, Boston College, Wheaton College in Illinois and Troy University in Alabama.

The archaeologists kept the discovery a secret for three years until the end of their dig because of a unique hazard of archaeology in modern-day Israel: they did not want to attract ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters, Mr Master said.

"We had to bite our tongues for a long time," he said.

In the past, the ultra-Orthodox have staged demonstrations at excavations where human remains are found, arguing that the remains could be Jewish and that disturbing them would violate a religious prohibition.

Mr Stager's team dug down about 3 metres (10 feet) to uncover the cemetery, which they found to have been used centuries later as a Roman vineyard.

On hands and knees, workers brushed away layers of dusty earth to reveal the brittle white bones of entire Philistine skeletons reposed as they were three millennia ago.

Decorated juglets believed to have contained perfumed oil were found in graves. Some bodies were still wearing bracelets and earrings. Others had weapons.

The archeologists also discovered some cremations, which the team say were rare and expensive for the period, and some larger jugs contained the bones of infants.

"The cosmopolitan life here is so much more elegant and worldly and connected with other parts of the eastern Mediterranean," Stager said, adding that this was in contrast to the more modest village lifestyle of the Israelites who lived in the hills to the east.

Archaeologists and biblical scholars have long believed the Philistines came from the Aegean region, based on pottery found in excavations of Philistine sites.

But scholars have debated where exactly in the Aegean region the Philistines came from: Mainland Greece, the islands of Crete or Cyprus, or even Anatolia, in modern-day Turkey.

The bones might hold the answers, said archaeologist Yosef (Yossi) Garfinkel, an Israeli expert on the period who did not participate in the dig. He called the cemetery find "a very significant discovery indeed."

The excavation of the cemetery has also shed light on Philistine burial practices.

The Philistines buried their dead with perfume bottles, placed near the face. Near the legs were jars that likely held oil, wine or food. In some cases, archaeologists found the dead were buried wearing necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even toe rings. Some were buried with their weapons.

"This is how Philistines treated their dead, and it's the code book to decoding everything," said archaeologist Adam Aja, a participant in the dig.

Finds from the cemetery went on display Sunday in an Israel Museum exhibition held at the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem.

This Is Not 'F**k You' In Japanese Sign Language

VIDEO: Weird News - Giving someone 'the finger' in Japanese Sign Language doesn't mean what you think it does.

The seemingly rude gesture is just a normal word when you put it into context but can you guess what it means? It might seem like a rude gesture to us but giving someone 'the finger' simply means 'brother' when you put it into the context of Japanese Sign Language.

Sticking up one middle finger is translated as 'ani' or å…„ which means 'older brother'.

Alternating two middle fingers in the air can be translated as 'kyoudai' or 兄弟 which simply means 'siblings'.

And while the Western world might attach a very different meaning to this gesture, it has never been known as a profanity in Japan. Japanese children are taught to attach names to all the fingers, according to Kotaku.com.

For example, the thumb is the 'father finger', the index finger is the 'mother finger', the middle finger is the brother finger', the ring finger is the 'sister finger' and the little finger is the 'baby finger'.

However, while the middle finger might not actually mean something as crude as it does in American or English culture, many Japanese people are now more than aware of the double meaning after the gesture has emerged in films.

Video Relay Service For Deaf - Phone Sex Scene

VIDEO: Hilarious movie clip - How to call to phone sex if you are Deaf.

The Little Death” does have one terrific ace up its sleeve: a fifth story, almost completely unconnected to the others, featuring Monica (Erin James, a bit of a Sally Hawkins lookalike), who works at a Skype-like video service translating phone calls for the Deaf.

On a slow night, she winds up on a call with Sam (T.J. Power), only to find that he wants her to mediate his conversation with a phone-sex operator (Genevieve Hegney). The Little Death Official Trailer - Directed by and starring Josh Lawson also with Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman.

The Little Death is a truly original comedy about sex, love, relationships and taboo. In a multi story narrative, we peer behind the closed doors of a seemingly normal suburban street. A woman with a dangerous fantasy and her partners struggle to please her. A man who begins an affair with his own wife without her knowing anything about it.

A couple struggling to keep things together after a sexual experiment spins out of control. A woman who can only find pleasure in her husband's pain. A call centre operator caught in the middle of a dirty and chaotic phone call. And the distractingly charming new neighbour who connects them all.

The little Death explores why do we want what we want? How far will we go to get it? What are the consequences of that fleeting moment of sexual ecstasy?
