Deaf School Children Sign The 9/11 Story

VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Deaf school children in Texas use sign language to paint a powerful portrait of what happened on Sept. 11.

USA Today - Teaching 9/11: “To them, it’s history, just like Pearl Harbor,” said Chris Causey, a middle school educator in Robertson County, Tenn. So, as the memories fade, teachers feel challenged to teach 9/11 in some way that is relevant to all ages in the United States.

In some schools in New Jersey, third graders learn about the K9 rescue teams while 12th graders discuss methods of prisoner interrogation. In Tennessee, older students at Stratford High School conduct a mock rescue at the World Trade Center; others arrange their desks like the seats of an airplane while Williamson County social studies teacher Kenneth Roeten asks students about their everyday morning routines and compares them to headlines just before the attacks.

Deaf school children in Texas use sign language to paint a powerful portrait of what happened on Sept. 11.

“I personally cannot think of any other event in American history that has had more of an impact on how everyday Americans live their life,” Roeten wrote in an email. “It has had a profound impact on my life; therefore, I believe it to be my duty as an educator to never stop teaching the shock, horror, sadness and utter disbelief of that day.”

But how? That's what school systems around the country are wrestling with now.

“I don’t think there’s a school system that has said ‘We’re going to focus on this,'” said Colleen Tambuscio, a teacher at New Milford High School in New Jersey who helped write a 9/11 curriculum through the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education in collaboration with the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in Manhattan. “I think what has happened in New Jersey - we’ve had moments of silence; we’ve had commemorative acts that were important. But now we should be getting into the educational piece, where we’re doing more with the education. That’s the trajectory.”

The lessons from the curriculum Tambuscio helped write include political and religious discussions; the history and present state of Islamic extremists; the global impact of the day economically; the ensuing wars; the backlash against Muslims; the change in day-to-day security and privacy implications; the huge personal tragedy; as well as stories of the first responders, extraordinary acts by ordinary citizens and the mission of service many felt afterward... Life and Deaf - BBC4 Documentary

VIDEO [CC] - BBC4 Documentary 'Life and Deaf' An immersive, experiential film in BSL about the Deaf world, with its unique humour and culture.

LONDON, UK -- An immersive, experiential film about the Deaf world, with its unique humour and culture - a world which most of us rarely encounter. The film is in British Sign Language. There is no score, no commentary, and none of the conventions of normal film-making.

The film follows some of the key characters who frequent St John's Deaf Club in north London as they face life's twists and turns and challenges.

The Costis are a big Deaf family. Tina Costi and her football-mad husband Marios are expecting a baby. For generations in Marios's family, boys are always born Deaf and girls are always born hearing. Will this new Costi baby break with tradition?

Like the Costis, Abigail also comes from a big Deaf family. She has just turned 30 and is about to make one of the biggest decisions of her life. She is considering undergoing surgery to have a cochlear implant fitted to help her deteriorating hearing, and also to better connect with her hearing friends. Abigail wants to be part of both worlds. But it's a controversial decision for her family, who proudly trace their Deaf Heritage back eight generations. How will this affect her relationship with both her family and the wider Deaf community?

At the heart of St John's Deaf Club is its football team. The rivalry between Deaf football teams is intense. Marios's brother Memnos is captain of the team. He eats, sleeps and breathes football. Passionate to the point of obsession, can he inspire his team to win the English Deaf Cup for the second time in a row?

College Humor: Canadian Rap Diss Music Video

VIDEO [CC] - If Canadians made a rap diss video, we hope it's not this embarrassing.

Huffingtonpost - In College Humor's (and that's humor without the "u") funny attempt to recreate a so-called Canadian rap diss video, what you're left with is almost two and a half minutes of maple syrup, age-old stereotypes and a lot of apologizing. And hey, we get it we're kind people who love to say "sorry," eat flapjacks and brag about our healthcare, but seriously, are we that predictable?

But in all earnestness, we are impressed with some of the rhymes, the very Canadian backdrop, the rappers' outfits, and let's just say we definitely have things we're grateful for from our American cousins down below.

We do have one suggestion though: maybe next time if we're in the need of a good rapper and an equally good diss, we would just give Drake a call? Source

Wells Fargo Ad: Learning American Sign Language

VIDEO [CC] - The US bank is promoting its embracing of diversity with a series of new adverts, one of which features a lesbian couple who are learning sign language for a very special reason.

Gay Star News - It’s becoming more and more common for big companies to highlight their diversity credentials and forward-thinking attitudes by featuring gay people in their advertising.

In recent months, businesses as diverse as Nikon, Cheerios and Hotwire have featured gay couples in commercials.

Now it’s Wells Fargo’s turn. The US bank is rolling out seven adverts as part of a new brand push under the banner ‘Why I Work’.

The first, revealed last week, is called ‘Learning Sign Language’. It features a female couple who are both learning sign language. The reason why? They’re about to become the new, adoptive mommies to a little girl with impaired hearing.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The commercial doesn’t fail to tug at the heartstrings while at the same time demonstrate the diverse nature of Wells Fargo’s clients. It’s the bank’s first national ad campaign to feature a same-sex couple.

The sign language advert was created by ad agency BBDO, who were appointed by Wells Fargo last year. Its executive creative director, Matt Miller, told AdAge that he was at first apprehensive that the bank – might resist the idea behind the latest campaign. However, the reverse was true and they embraced the concept. Read the full story: http://gaystarnews.com/article/wells-fargo-feature-same-sex-couple-adorable-new-advert

Video Relay Service For Deaf - Phone Sex Scene

VIDEO: Hilarious movie clip - How to call to phone sex if you are Deaf.

The Little Death” does have one terrific ace up its sleeve: a fifth story, almost completely unconnected to the others, featuring Monica (Erin James, a bit of a Sally Hawkins lookalike), who works at a Skype-like video service translating phone calls for the Deaf.

On a slow night, she winds up on a call with Sam (T.J. Power), only to find that he wants her to mediate his conversation with a phone-sex operator (Genevieve Hegney). What ensues is a perfectly timed, beautifully structured verbal and gestural farce that manages to be at once raucously funny, sweetly touching and genuinely romantic.

Rife with awkwardness and miscommunication, and keenly attuned to the reality of what a mixed blessing technology can be, the story would work well as a stand-enough short; as such, it’s easily the most promising evidence here that Lawson the writer-director may yet have bigger and better things ahead of him... Read more variety.com/2014/film/reviews/toronto-film-review-the-little-death

The Little Death Official Trailer - Directed by and starring Josh Lawson also with Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman.

The Little Death is a truly original comedy about sex, love, relationships and taboo. In a multi story narrative, we peer behind the closed doors of a seemingly normal suburban street. A woman with a dangerous fantasy and her partners struggle to please her. A man who begins an affair with his own wife without her knowing anything about it.

A couple struggling to keep things together after a sexual experiment spins out of control. A woman who can only find pleasure in her husband's pain. A call centre operator caught in the middle of a dirty and chaotic phone call. And the distractingly charming new neighbour who connects them all.

The little Death explores why do we want what we want? How far will we go to get it? What are the consequences of that fleeting moment of sexual ecstasy?

Cast: Josh Lawson, Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman
