For Deaf Tennis Player, Sound Is No Barrier

VIDEO: New York Times - Lee Duck-hee, 18, of South Korea, is ranked 143rd in the world in a sport in which hearing the ball is considered crucial.

ASAN, South Korea -- To improve its chances in the boys’ team tennis event at the National Sports Festival here, Mapo High School in Seoul brought in a ringer from Jecheon, two hours southeast of the capital. His name was Lee Duck-hee, and he had first caught the coach’s eye when he was in elementary school.

Mapo High’s players pressed against the fence beside along the dusty hardcourts and chanted in support while Lee, 18, crushed forehand winners past his bespectacled opponent in the final. The 6-1, 6-1 win took little time - no surprise, as Lee is the best teenage player in South Korea, and a professional ranked 143rd in the world.

“Seeing the level of skill, power and returning is totally different than high school level,” said Jeong Yeong-sok, his doubles partner at the tournament.

Lee is exceptional among professionals, too. He is Deaf, and no Deaf player in the sport’s history has reached these heights. In tennis, simply seeing the ball is believed to be insufficient. Hearing the ball, top players say, enables faster reactions - a crucial advantage in a sport where powerful serves and groundstrokes mean that every tiny fraction of a second matters.

“There are so many different spins in tennis, and I can hear a lot of them coming off someone’s racket because I know what they all sound like,” said Katie Mancebo, a college tennis coach and volunteer coach for the United States Deaf tennis team. “But a Deaf player doesn’t know that sound, so they have to focus more on what the other person is doing, how they’re making contact, and what the ball looks like as it’s coming over the net.”

Joo Hyun-sang, the tennis coach at Mapo High School, said he was skeptical of Lee’s potential at first.

“When I met him the first time, I had certain doubts that being deaf would prevent him from being a great player,” he said. “But I grew confident from watching him develop and improve. I was very confident he could do it.”

Though already the second-highest-ranked player of professionals 18 and under, Lee has not fully broken through. He has yet to play a main-draw match at an ATP tournament or a Grand Slam, though he reached the final of a Challenger event, the level below the ATP World Tour, for the first time in September in Taiwan, and has made two semifinals since... Deaflympics Begin In Samsun Despite Turkey's Failed Military Coup Attempt

VIDEO - Deaf News: World Deaf Championships begin in Samsun despite Turkey's failed military coup attempt: ICSD President Valery Rukhledev says.

SAMSUN, TURKEY -- The 2016 World Deaf Championships are going ahead as planned at Samsun’s Batıpark despite the recent failed military coup in Turkey.

The week-long Championships, which are due to conclude on Sunday (July 24), are serving as preparation for the 2017 Deaflympics in the Turkish city.

They begun just three days after members of Turkish Armed Forces unsuccessfully attempted to seize control of several key places in cities such as Ankara and Istanbul.

It ended after forces loyal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan maintained social order within 48 hours.

The Government says 312 people were killed in the coup, including 145 civilians, 60 police, three soldiers and 104 plotters.

International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) President Valery Rukhledev, who attended the Opening Ceremony of the World Deaf Championships, described the military coup as "deeply shocking".

"ICSD strongly condemns it as barbaric and cowardly act," he said.

"This is not only attack on the Government of Turkey, on humanity but on all humanitarian and Olympic values.

"ICSD stands united with the Turkish people and people from around the globe.

"Our thoughts and prayers with the families of those who have been killed and wounded.

"This is a heartbreaking situation."

Rukhledev was joined at the Opening Ceremony by Turkey's Minister of Youth and Sports Akif Çağatay Kılıç, who led the "365 days countdown ceremony" for next year’s Deaflympics, scheduled to be held from July 18 to 30.

Kılıç started the countdown signboard at the Republic Square via live broadcast.

"We are happy to host you all," he said.

"I don’t doubt that Samsun will organise two excellent events.

"We will reunite next year for the 2017 Deaflympics."

The World Deaf Championships are made up of five sports including beach volleyball, judo, karate, table tennis and taekwondo.

As part of their visit, team delegations were given detailed information about sport complexes and ongoing operations for next year’s Deaflympics.

"Deaflympics 2017 in Samsun will be our common success," added Rukhledev.

Their separate carrying out due to the fact that the competition among Deaf athletes are conducted in full compliance with the rules of international sports federations for ordinary athletes, while Paralympians compete in the special rules designed for varying degrees of disability.

First Soviet athletes participated in these prestigious competitions in 1971, and since 1995 in the Deaflympics team acts of the Russian Federation. Winter Deaflympics Russians consistently (except for the Games in 1971 and 1987) took first place in the unofficial team standings.

Deaf Football Lawsuit For Discrimination

VIDEO: Family of Deaf child sues football association for discrimination in Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - A Fridley family filed suit this week against the Spring Lake Park Panther Youth Football Association over their Deaf son’s participation in the league. They believe the nonprofit should’ve paid for interpreters and allowed the family to use a special drum to signal the start of play.

Nine-year-old Dov Nathanson says he loves to play football. “I just think it’s cool. I love to tackle people it’s exciting,” he said.

Dov and and his brother Galvin are both Deaf, and they’ve played football with hearing children for years. But last year, the football association said he and his brother Galvin could no longer use a special drum that helps them know when the play is starting.

“Without it, I couldn’t feel it i couldn’t feel the vibration,” Dov said. “I was never ready for the play.”

Parents David and Gloria Nathanson are also upset that the association said they wouldn’t pay for an interpreter for their son’s last year. They say it’s the association’s responsibility.

“We were very frustrated nobody would listen,” David Nathanson said. “It was like we didn’t have a voice.”

Phil Richard, President of the Spring Lake Park Panther Youth Football Association, says the drum made it interfered with the game for other players, and that the family should be responsible for providing their own interpreter.

“It really just comes down to funding. It’s expensive,” Richard said. “We finished out year with $4,000. The cost of an interpreter is double that, and the law, we feel, protects us from that.”

Both Dov and Galvin plan to register for football again this year. The family says they want the policy changed–to allow Deaf players fair play.

“We’re just hoping that in the future that we will feel included,” Gloria Nathanson said.

Also mentioned in the lawsuit is a claim that David Nathanson was denied the opportunity to coach either of his sons teams last year, which he believes is because he’s also Deaf. He had coached three previous years. SOURCE

Deaf Canadian Curling Champion Dies

Deaf Manitoba curler, Clifford Beaulieu, 42, sent to hospital after being discovered outside by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

CBC WINNIPEG - The family of a Manitoba man who died after spending the night outdoors is devastated and still has questions about what led him into the cold.

Clifford Beaulieu, 42, was spending time with some friends at a home in the Rural Municipality of St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba. Feb. 4. He left and never returned.

Martin said the group had been drinking and that Clifford left the house after an argument broke out.
