The Internet Opens A Window To The Deaf World
VIDEO: The internet opens a window to the Deaf world: Lydia Callis.
Huffington Post - While mainstream media still struggles to integrate diversity into programming, the internet offers a vastly different experience. People around the globe, of all backgrounds and abilities, are uploading original new content every day, smashing boring stereotypes and changing the way we view different cultures. With a larger number of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people sharing their opinions, ideas, and even their jokes, wider audiences are opening up to the real experience of deafness and Deaf communication.
Thanks to the web, the lines between Deaf and Hearing entertainment are beginning to blur. Because it is so easy to add captioning now, Deaf video creators are sharing their blogs, their art, and their lives with audiences who they may not have been able to reach in the past. By making their videos accessible, Deaf people have the opportunity to frame their own experiences and creatively express themselves without being filtered by hearing editors and producers.
DeafNation, founded in 2003, is home to some of the most diverse Deaf video content on the web. DeafNation's DN360 is an ongoing news-style program which discusses health, current events, and conducts interviews with Deaf community members. Note: DeafNation does not provide to share the video.
iDeafNews is another reputable source of news and information on a wide variety of topics.
Deaf and Hearing Network, DHN is a news agency that makes excellent use of YouTube to share information in a fully accessible way.
ASL Nook is an educational YouTube series which teaches ASL and showcases a Deaf family.
Don't Shoot the Messenger is an upcoming YouTube comedy series which centers around the awkward moments and daily misunderstandings of an ASL interpreter living and working in New York City.
Rikki Poynter's YouTube channel. As a hard of hearing (non-sign language) beauty blogger, Poynter discovered there were many barriers to web access, as many people choose not to caption their video content, so she began advocating for better online accessibility.
ASL Slam uses the Facebook video feature to post a wide variety of Deaf-created video content, and their Instagram account is also full of great clips.
As the hearing world becomes increasingly fascinated by Deaf Culture and American Sign Language, it is important for us to recognize the many Deaf people who are already out there sharing their authentic experiences. ISIS Using Sign Language To Recruit Deaf Terrorists
EXCLUSIVE VIDEO - ISIS militants are using sign language to show that even people with disabilities can wage jihad for the Islamic State, a report said.
NEW YORK POST - In their latest recruitment video, titled “From Who Excused To Those Not Excused,” a pair of Deaf and mute fighters brandishing machine guns issued threats and urged Westerners to join their campaign of terror, NBC News reports.
The extremists claim to be working as traffic police in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which has become an ISIS stronghold in recent months. They are wearing black jumpsuits and military equipment fitted with handcuffs and ammunition as they speak about their desire to “slaughter” their enemies and radicalize others who will do the same.
Using both Arabic and English subtitles, the video begins with the statement: “We, the deaf and mute, direct our message to the Islamic world.”
“To the Muslims in Europe, both Arab and non-Arab, the way is open before you for you to come to the land of the Kilafah,” one of the militants continues, using sign language.
“The Islamic State is expanding…and we say to America, Britain, Italy and France, who have frantically mobilized against the Muslims, and we say to the rulers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, who have allied with them…the Messenger said, ‘We have only come to you with slaughter,’ and we will surely come and slaughter you, by Allah’s permission.”
Alex Kassirer, a researcher at the global security firm Flashpoint Intelligence, says the video “represents an attempt by the group to recruit other physically or otherwise impaired individuals, as well as demonstrates the multifaceted responsibilities of those in its ranks,” according to NBC News. He added that it now proves “even traffic police in the Islamic State have a dual functionality, also serving in military roles.” ... Deaf Militants Releases ISIS Propaganda Video
EXCLUSIVE VIDEO - The Islamic State media branch has released a new video for Deaf Muslims, calling for all disabled Muslims in Europe to join jihad.
Men claim to be Deaf brothers working as traffic police in Mosul, Iraq. They show off their job while urging European Muslims to go and fight and the fighters pledge to 'slaughter' Britain, America and their Arabian allies, at the end of the film they are shown firing missiles at Kurdish troops.
The Deaf militants has released a new propaganda video showing two Deaf fighters speaking in sign language and urging more Westerners to join the terror group.
The video is titled 'From Who Excused To Those Not Excused' - suggesting that disability is no excuse for not serving for ISIS.
In the five minute clip the two men, who are Deaf and brothers, are shown working as traffic police in Iraq's second city Mosul, which has been under ISIS control since last summer.
Speaking in sign language with English and Arabic subtitles, one of the men says: 'I am a deaf mute who works in the traffic police in the Islamic State with my brother Abu Abdur-Rahman.
'As for my message to the apostate peshmerga (Kurdish fighters) we will strike you soon, by Allah's permission. I am living in a land in which Allah's sharia is established.'
Wearing black jumpsuits, ammunition pouches and carrying what appear to be M16 assault rifles, the pair also speak about their desire to 'slaughter' their enemies including Britain, America, France and Italy, saying 'you will not stop our advance'... Joshua Beckman: No More Deaf Schools ?
VIDEO: [ASL/CC] - Do you care about Deaf Schools?
The video producer by Joshua Beckman also known as vlogger posted on YouTube social networking for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. This vlog in ASL storytelling of the Deaf Schools and education the community.
You care about Deaf schools right? Well I too, care about the Deaf schools.
Did you know that many of those schools endure hardship? What struggles are there, you might ask? Lack of moral support from the government, community, staff, administration, teachers, parents. Support is naught and hard to find. There are funding constraints as well.
Now you are watching me in disbelief. Worrying, disappointed; feeling angry, frustrated, heart-wrenched. Me too, I am in the exact same boat as you are.
What can the Deaf community do to help? There is a solution… but it is not an imminent fix. They are as following:
1) All Deaf schools must have at least 75% Deaf people working there. What I meant by 75% is, for instance: chefs, landscape maintenance workers, custodians, teachers, education assistants, staff, support staff, administration et cetera. All positions available must be at least 75% employed by Deaf people.
With that being said, the system itself must change first. How? We, the Deaf people take initiative with the due process.
2) The names of the Deaf schools themselves must change.
It all boils down to the word ‘for’ inside the name of the school. It bears a negative connotation. Essentially it means a population for you [hearing people] to serve, and to provide support. The word ‘for’ is archaic. Why don't we use Deaf schools instead? More positive. That term is a direct reflection of the Deaf community
3) Deaf E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N, we must take back what belongs to us.
We decide. We control. We govern and modify policies accordingly. Not them, hearing people. The government workers must no longer be in such position with power. Again, we decide. Doing so, we all must collaborate together, collectively.

Facebook Opens Worlds For The Deaf
VIDEO [CC] - One billion people use Facebook around the world. Its reach is undisputed and unparalleled, but its impact on one specific community has opened up doors to a new world for the Deaf.
Christina Teani, 34, of South San Francisco is a teacher for special needs students. She understands putting in that extra bit of effort because she was born with what she calls “an invisible disability” unable to hear without wearing a hearing aid.
“You can often feel like that sometimes you are not good enough, you don’t feel like you’re part of a group,” Teani explained. “Human relationships are all about intimacy, getting to know people, feeling like you belong in a group and if you’re not able to connect, you emotionally feel left out.”
But her life has changed, much like it has for her Deaf friend, Sarah McBride of Palo Alto.
“With Facebook, I’m able to communicate with my friends through chat,” she said.
These women say the social media site has opened up a whole new world to them, offering up not only quick chats with friends, but the ability to share memories through pictures and videos especially satisfying for them because it’s one of the first times they’ve been able to communicate the same way the hearing community does.
So when the opportunity came up to visit the company that made it happen, they didn’t hesitate. Together with friends, they took tour of Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park to celebrate the changes they’ve experienced in their lives.
“That’s what I like about Facebook," Teani said. "We’re all on the same playing field we haven’t had before.” ...Read more: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Facebook-IOpens-New-World-For-Deaf-186194282.html

Deaf Prisoner Advocacy: Lobbing The FCC For Change
VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Deaf Prisoner Advocacy Lobbying the FCC for Change: Discrimination Against Deaf, Hard of Hearing & signing users.
HEARD interns Rita Torres & Alexandre Dubsky explain how the Community can support equal communication access for all Deaf, hard of hearing, speech impaired prisoners and their family members.
On December 28, 2012, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to address the long-standing issue of high prison telephone rates. Hearing prisoners' telephone calls can cost their family members as much as $17 for just 15 minutes of time. These excessive rates prevent families from maintaining contact with loved ones.
Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-Blind, speech impaired, and hearing prisoners with Deaf family members endure an even greater financial burden with respect to telephone rates due to a number of factors, including (1) telephone rates being applied evenly to TTY and regular voice phone calls, the former of which is much more time-consuming; (2) failure of prisons to install videophones and captioned telephones; (3) security measures that either prevent Deaf prisoners from calling relay operators or cause them to incur additional fees by requiring relay services; and (4) security measures that require Deaf prisoners to only place collect calls.
The FCC has requested public comments on whether prisoner phone rates should be reduced and capped and on Deaf & disabled prisoner telecommunications access. This video explains some of the inequities that persist for Deaf, signing & speech impaired prisoners and their families with regard to rates for and access to telecommunications in prison. Please follow the directions in the document to submit a comment to the FCC. http://www.fcc.gov/

Deaf Victims of Sexual Assaults in Catholic School
VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Pope resigns without apologizing to Deaf victims from St. John’s school.
WITI MILWAUKEE – The spiritual leader of 1.2 billion Catholics, Pope Benedict XVI, surprised the world Monday, February 11th by saying he will resign at the end of the month “because of advanced age.” It’s the first time a pope has stepped down in nearly 600 years. Many on Monday, reacted to the news including SNAP, the Survivors Network for Those Abused by Priests.
In a statement, entitled “Pope resigns without ever apologizing to Milwaukee’s Deaf victims from St. John’s school,” John Pilmaier, SNAP Wisconsin Director said: “It is difficult today, with the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI is retiring this month, not to think of the many victim/survivors of sexual abuse from St. John’s School for the Deaf.”
According to SNAP, it was Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger in his previous post running the powerful Doctrine for the Congregation of the Faith CDF), who was in charge of the fate of the notorious Fr. Lawrence Murphy.
Murphy, Ratzinger knew, had sexually assaulted at least 200 children at the boarding school in Milwaukee. Ratzinger ordered that Murphy be left in ministry, unpunished and unprosecuted, undetected to the public, and remain a priest, with all the rights, honors, and power which the church grants only to ordained clerics, right up until his death.
In its statement, SNAP says: “Benedict never once contacted, spoke to, or apologized to the Deaf victims from St. John’s.” ... Read more: http://fox6now.com/2013/02/11/snap-pope-resigns-without-apologizing-to-victims-from-st-johns-school/
