Deaf Can Coffee - The Jamaica Coffee Shop

VIDEO [CC] - The Caribbean coffee shop, what is Deaf Can! Coffee all about?

KINGSTON -- A video capturing the purpose and vision of Deaf Can! Coffee, a not-for-profit coffee shop seeking to engage, equip and empower Deaf youth. We exist to encourage Deaf youth to believe in their talents and abilities, engage their passions and interests and foster creative, positive thought in a healthy community that builds each other up and enables them to dream. We will accomplish this through a sustainable coffee venture known for a memorable experience, great product and talented staff.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

What began as a small idea of packaging and selling coffee for a rural, Deaf coffee farmer grew as word spread and people wanted more. However, one farmer could not meet the demand and so we considered options to increase the supply of roasted coffee. From there we began roasting coffee at the Kingston campus of Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf in an effort to train and expose teen students to the art of coffee roasting.

The challenges of sourcing dry beans and getting licensed in Jamaica as a coffee brand soon became a barrier that we thought might stop the initiative completely. The vision, however, simply shifted from being all about roasting coffee to a focus on brewing the coffee as well and creating a completely new experience for the marketplace. Closed captioning [CC] and subtitling are both processes of displaying text on a television, video screen, or other visual display to provide additional or interpretive information for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Captions and Subtitles are essentially the same and typically used as a transcription of the audio portion of a program as it occurs (either verbatim or in edited form), sometimes including descriptions of non-speech elements. Other uses have been to provide a textual alternative language translation of a presentation's primary audio language which is usually burned-in (or "open") to the video and not selectable (or "closed")... Marlee Matlin Promotes 'Switched at Birth' Episode

VIDEO [CC] - Good Morning America: Exclusive interview with Marlee Matlin in Landmark 'Switched at Birth' Episode.

Actress discusses taking a risk in using American Sign Language and subtitles on ABC Family's ‘Switched at Birth.

Actress Marlee Matlin came by Good Morning America March 4 2013 to talk about the landmark new episode of Switched at Birth, which will be the first in history to be aired on television entirely in American Sign Language. Marlee Matlin, who is Deaf in real life, appeared with a translator, who facilitated the interview between her and Robin Roberts.

Matlin said it’s been an amazing journey for her, because she began in the business 28 years ago trying to get her language, American Sign Language, across to anyone watching television or movies. She said it’s going to be beautiful to show and highlight to the whole world the culture of American Sign Language.

The clip they showed of tonight’s Switched at Birth episode was extremely powerful. I’ve never seen the show, but Marlee Matlin and actress Lea Thompson were sitting at a dining room table signing to each other about how to get reporters to a high school presentation of Romeo And Juliet.

The clip was completely silent. There wasn’t even background noise. The silence, plus the American Sign Language used by both actresses discussing something as everyday as a high school play, was really striking and wonderful. It’s going to be a great episode... Creating Music Accessible For Deaf Children

VIDEO [BSL/CC] - BBC News - Creating music accessible for Deaf children.

Lying on a sound box: Deaf children listen to music - The National Orchestra of Wales has staged a series of workshops and concerts for Deaf people, many of them children, to explore how it is possible to experience music without being able to hear it fully.

The National Orchestra of Wales has been staging unique workshops and concerts for Deaf people. Radio 4 reporter Andrew Bomford discovers children listening to music in a very physical way and speaks to those behind it. Here he blogs about his emotional day.

I'll admit that I am a bit weepy sometimes. I cried at the end of Les Miserables, so the moment that the Welsh National Orchestra string section got started, and Katherine Mount stood there, signing and singing to her profoundly deaf - but clearly enraptured - ten year old son Ethan, I wasn't surprised to feel myself choking up again. Watch Katherine Mount singing Ethan's Song on YouTube

It was towards the end of a long, joyful, but emotionally draining day with the orchestra and children from The Ysgol Maes Dyfan special school in Barry near Cardiff. Some of them are almost completely deaf and others have serious hearing problems, but the joy and enthusiasm shown by the children in their appreciation of the music they were experiencing was wonderful to see. ... Deaf Prisoner Advocacy: Lobbing The FCC For Change

VIDEO [ASL/CC] - Deaf Prisoner Advocacy Lobbying the FCC for Change: Discrimination Against Deaf, Hard of Hearing & signing users.

HEARD interns Rita Torres & Alexandre Dubsky explain how the Community can support equal communication access for all Deaf, hard of hearing, speech impaired prisoners and their family members.

On December 28, 2012, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to address the long-standing issue of high prison telephone rates. Hearing prisoners' telephone calls can cost their family members as much as $17 for just 15 minutes of time. These excessive rates prevent families from maintaining contact with loved ones.

Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-Blind, speech impaired, and hearing prisoners with Deaf family members endure an even greater financial burden with respect to telephone rates due to a number of factors, including (1) telephone rates being applied evenly to TTY and regular voice phone calls, the former of which is much more time-consuming; (2) failure of prisons to install videophones and captioned telephones; (3) security measures that either prevent Deaf prisoners from calling relay operators or cause them to incur additional fees by requiring relay services; and (4) security measures that require Deaf prisoners to only place collect calls.

The FCC has requested public comments on whether prisoner phone rates should be reduced and capped and on Deaf & disabled prisoner telecommunications access. This video explains some of the inequities that persist for Deaf, signing & speech impaired prisoners and their families with regard to rates for and access to telecommunications in prison. Please follow the directions in the document to submit a comment to the FCC. http://www.fcc.gov/

Deaf Want A Fair Hearing On Film & TV Subtitles

VIDEO [CC] Maltese Deaf people want a fair hearing on film and TV subtitles.

VALLETTA, MALT -- The quality of life of Deaf people would dramatically improve if subtitles were introduced on TV and in cinemas, according to campaigners. “Think how much general knowledge you get from the TV,” said Alison Vere from the Deaf People Association, which is behind the Subtitles Now campaign launched recently.

“With the exception of the five-minute Deaf News in Maltese sign language, local TV is inaccessible to Deaf and those hard of hearing,” she added.

Organised jointly with film culture NGO Kinemastik, Subtitles Now is promoting the introduction of sub-titles on TV and more screenings of subtitled movies in cinemas.

The campaign released a video on Youtube to drive home its message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5D_y2G5els.

It starts with sound and subtitles so that all people can understand what is happening, but then the captions disappear and all the dialogue is conducted in sign language.

Eventually the sound of Bob Dylan singing the words “How does it feel?” from Like a Rolling Stone can be heard and a caption asks, “How does it feel to see but not hear?”

Ms Vere said deafness was an invisible disability because it went unseen unless people were communicating in sign language or wearing visible hearing aids.

If their campaign is successful, it would “provide a quantum leap in the quality of life of Deaf Maltese and would also help increase Deaf literacy.”

Association president Steven Mulvaney visited the UK recently and was amazed to find he had the option of closed caption subtitles on every programme on the TV in his hotel room, available through the push of a button.

The association would like Maltese Deaf people to have the same option... Read more: http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130205/local/Deaf-want-a-fair-hearing-on-film-and-TV-subtitles-.456320

Deaf Cambodians, A Punishment ?

VIDEO [CC] - A punishment for being Deaf in the state of Cambodia.

PHNOM PENH - According certain beliefs in Cambodia, any disabilities is the result of a bad karma due to bad actions in a previous life.

The NGO Aide et Action runs a project which aims at changing people's behaviours, mentalities and integrate Deaf and Blind children into society. Through education, Aide et Action fights against exclusion and discrimination.

In Cambodia, the percentage of the population living with disabilities is one of the highest in the world. At least 650,000 Cambodians live with a disability, and the exact count may be as high as 1.4 million.

The incidence of disability is also expected to increase in the future. Despite the fact that many Cambodians have at least one disability, the country does not have adequate legal provisions to protect the human rights of people with disabilities.

There are no comprehensive laws that address disability issues. The few existing laws provide only implicit protections and some directly discriminate against people with disabilities... Read more: http://digital.law.washington.edu/dspace-law/handle/1773.1/521

Deaf Education Reform Act Petition

Please sign the petition to recognize ASL as an official school language. The Obama Administration to officially recognize American Sign Language as a community language and a language of instruction in schools.

For more than a hundred years, American Sign Language (ASL) has been persecuted as a "lesser" language. It is a homegrown and complete language that has survived efforts to wipe it out.

Yet today, ASL is still considered "foreign" and not given the respect and protection it needs. Many states have passed laws allowing credit for ASL classes as a foreign language but they have stopped short of recognizing its benefits as a language of instruction in schools, despite studies proving its benefits for students.

Official federal recognition will finally give ASL the "welcome home" it needs. We need 25,000 by December 12, 2012.

Growth of Viral Video Leaves Deaf Community In The Dark

WASHINGTON - Viral videos may be good for sharing ideas and spreading funny foreign pop hits, but they are leaving millions of Deaf and Hearing Impaired people out of the loop.

Online video is becoming a more ubiquitous part of American life. Netflix videos made up one-third of online data used in the United States last year. YouTube expects 90 percent of online traffic to be video in the next few years. By 2016, Cisco estimates, 1.2 million minutes of video will be streamed or downloaded every second.

That video explosion has been great for small-film and TV producers, who are able to reach an audience without a big studio budget, and fans of niche programming. But in some ways, it has left the deaf and hard-of-hearing community starting from scratch after years of advocating for captions on traditional television.

“We could be back to square one,” said Christian Vogler, director of the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University.

The rise of e-mails, instant messages and social media was a godsend to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, which embraced the new, text-based ways to communicate.

“In the mid- to late 1990s, it was close to the ideal medium,” Vogler said. But as the Web evolved to include more video, he said, old barriers to communication resurfaced. ...
